Prerequisites
- The OpenVPN GUI software must be installed and configured on the computer that will initiate the remote connection. Typically, the home computer. This operation is generally carried out by your IT technician.
- A working internet connection. Some internet connections, such as public Wi-Fi for example, may be filtered and you will not be able to establish the connection remotely.
Opening a secure communication channel
- Running OpenVPN GUI: You can verify that the software is ready to establish a secure communication channel by left-clicking the arrow at the bottom right of your screen as shown in the image below. If the software is running, proceed to step 3.
- If the software is not running, you can open it from the Start menu or its desktop shortcut. The icon looks like this:
- In the bottom right notification area, right-click on the OpenVPN GUI icon and left-click on “Connect” as in the image below
- The software will now ask you to enter a username and password (1). It may already be configured and remembered. You can check the “Remember password” option (2) if you wish. Click OK (3). In case you have the ESET Secure Authentication two-factor authentication app, the 6-digit code generated by the app is your password. In the latter case, it is not appropriate to check “Remember password”.
- OpenVPN GUI now creates a secure communication channel between your computer and your company's IT infrastructure.
- Once the channel is created, the window which was in the middle of the screen disappears and you can check that the channel is active as in the following image where the screen turns green. A notification message may also appear in the lower right corner of the screen if these are not disabled.
Access a remote desktop
- Run your desktop file remotely. It looks like the following image
- When you first connect, the following message appears. Check “Do not ask me again for connections to this computer” (1) and click Connection (2)
- Enter your password (1) and click OK (2). Note ; If the username is not correct, click on "Other choice" in blue then on "Use another account" and enter your username and the associated password and finish with "OK"
- You can check the option "Do not ask me again for connections to this computer" (1) and click Yes (2)
- You are now connected to a remote session.
